Daihatsu Motor Co., Ltd. (ダイハツ工業株式会社, Daihatsu Kōgyō Kabushiki-gaisha , TYO: 7262, OSE: 7262) is a Japanese manufacturer of cars, well known for its smaller models and off-road vehicles. Many of its models are also known as kei jidosha (or kei cars) in Japan.

The name "Daihatsu" is a combination of the first kanji for Osaka (大) and the first of the word "engine manufacture" ); when put together they are pronounced "dai hatsu."

Daihatsu was formed in 1951 as successor organisation to Hatsudoki, and by the 1960s had started exporting cars to Europe, although it did not enjoy any major sales success until well into the 1980s.

Since February 1992 in North America, it has been common for Toyota to distribute Daihatsu models.

Front stylingThe friendly looking front mask features a trapezoidal grille and round projector headlamps. It's a unique design that's also paired up with the rear-end design.

Rear styling
With the lamps sporting the same image as that of their front-end equivalents, the equally unique rear styling is almost identical to the front. The rear combination lamp is a new 100% indirect lighting type employing a geometric-patterned reflector inside a clear lens.

Interior
Metallic trims add a dash of brilliance to the sporty black tone of the interior. The instrument panel parts are joined with only the smallest possible intermediate gaps to produce instrument panel with an integrated feel. The result is a high-quality and sports-minded interior.

Active Top
One of the most attention-grabbing features of the Copen, the Active Top (electrically operated folding roof) folds into the boot, or covers the cabin from the folded position, in approximately 20 seconds. This means you can enjoy the wide-open feel of the open sports car and the comfort of the coupe without having to panic at a sudden change in the weather. Compared with the conventional soft top, the hard top excels in weatherability and is much quieter.

Engine
The JB-DET engine, designed exclusively for the Copen, generates sufficient torque from the low rev range. The driver feels the torque increase linearly from startup and the engine responds directly to pressure on the throttle pedal.

(1) Dual flow turbo
Two pipes are used to funnel the exhaust gas into the turbine, improving the boost efficiency in the low rev range, and delivering a powerful and high-torque run from the low to high rev ranges.
(2) Small diameter turbo
Small-diameter impellers are used for the turbine. By optimizing their size, a direct acceleration response is realized.
(3) Abradable seal structure
The compressor housing incorporates a resin material which minimizes the clearance between the compressing wheel and the case to further raise turbo-charging efficiency. Powerful torque from the low rev range drives the car with indefatigable acceleration.

Highly rigid body and sporty suspension
Including the double cross beams in the centre of the body, a total of five braces are employed in addition to the effective use of reinforcements and an increased wall thickness for the centre tunnel. This results in a highly rigid, firm body, while the short wheelbase contributes to the vehicle's magnificent manoeuvrability and agility. Thanks also to the optimally tuned suspension, the Copen provides a smooth and compliant ride with great stability.

Special tuned suspension
Special tuned front and rear springs and dampers further increase the Copen's driving performance. The rear dampers, in particular, are of a separate-pressure type with an independent tank. (OPT for EU only)

Light weight body

So, the Copen is a Japanese K-Car, which means that it has a small engine, more specifically a 4 cylinder 660cc block.

Fun is guaranteed though in this very-close-to-the-ground roadster. The Daihatsu Copen is a 2-door roadster with an aluminium retractable hardtop built by the Japanese car company Daihatsu. It debuted at the 2001 Tokyo Motor Show as the Daihatsu OFC-1 concept, based on Daihatsu's front-wheel-drive light-car platform.

The Copen was originally designed with a 660 cc turbocharged engine in order to meet Japanese kei car regulations. However it no longer meets environmental emissions standards in several countries, so in these markets the Copen is fitted with a more powerful 1.3 L powerplant.

At the 2005 Frankfurt Motor Show, Daihatsu revealed two new models of the Copen, a 1.3l and the 'ZZ'.

Introducing a concept model that shows the future shape of an open sports car, conceived by Daihatsu as a car for adults who want to feel the wind as they drive.

The OFC-1 expresses the feel of a liberating, transparent canopy cockpit, and the familiarity of a flowing, smooth teardrop silhouette. Moreover, a glass top with liquid crystal sunshade used for the electromotive canopy-top open roof offers a free and liberating open-air feeling, regardless of the weather.

The 3-piece electromotive open roof completes operation in less than ten seconds and preserves independent trunk space even when the roof is open to improve the convenience of compact convertibles and allow enough trunk storage space for two adults to take an overnight trip.

In addition, a rear spoiler melded into the body, plus the 17-inch alloy wheels, express powerful running performance.

The interior is an expression of the sports mind compressed into a compact space. In addition to the expression of a mechanical image function in the meter center cluster, the high-contrast interior color arrangement serves to orchestrate a progressive, high-quality and sporty interior space.

For running performance, the powertrain technology combines a high-performance turbo engine together with CVT with 7-speed paddle shift to achieve the highest level of both fuel consumption performance and environmental performance for vehicles in its class.

To commensurate with the underside of a sports car, the vehicle is equipped with 4 wheel disc brakes, electronic modulated suspension and stabilizers which improves roll stiffness thus producing a high performing spinning system together with the adoption of the 165/50R17 sport tires.

Mounted in its compact body is a 1.5-litre engine. Design emphasis has been placed on styling that has magnetic presence, as well as supreme performance that offers a driving experience yet to be known.

The basic styling concept for the Copen ZZ is the streamline of a teardrop. Its smooth and flowing bodyline and its small but stately body show the dynamism and power of this compact car.
